Wireless Reach Growing in China

Building on Qualcomm’s continued efforts in China, Wireless Reach recently announced a project to bring Internet access to schools. It also became a popular blog topic, and was nominated for an award.

Bringing Internet access to Sichuan Earthquake-strickenareas

More than 14,000 students and teachers in China’s Sichuan Province now have access to 3G HSPA Internet thanks to Qualcomm’s Wireless Reach 3G Computer Classroom project.

Qualcomm collaborated with Shanghai Yan Bao Hang Public Philanthropic Foundation and Sichuan China Unicom to build ten wireless computer classrooms in eight primary and middle schools – all near the site of the May 2008 Sichuan earthquake.

The project was the first of three planned to launch in China this year. All are aligned withthe Chinese government’s strategy to bring infrastructure and communications technology to the midwest areas of China. And each builds on Qualcomm’s continued efforts to work with the Chinese government, Chinese nongovernmental organizations and technology partners.

Qualcomm SVP and Greater China President Xiang Wang highlighted Qualcomm’s Wireless Reach vision and continued commitment to Chinese community development through the proliferation of technology.

More than 200 guests, including media, project staff, teachers and student representatives attended a program launch event at Ya’an Middle School in Ya’an.

“A commitment to education is an important part of Qualcomm’s Wireless Reach initiative,” said Xiang Wang, Senior Vice President and Greater China President, at the event.  “We believe 3G wireless technology can support educational progress in underserved regions and simultaneously promote local economic and social development. We also hope this program in Sichuan will further support the rebuilding of earthquake-hit areas in the province and create more opportunities for local students and teachers.”

Media feedback has been positive with articles focusing on the educational and social benefits of 3G technology.
